Jeremy Conlon - Location Sound Recordist - Left of Elephant Sound

About

Owner/Founder, Left of Elephant Sound

Run by Jeremy (Jez) Conlon, a freelance sound recordist – sound engineer, musician, and composer, who has had over 29 years experience in many facets of the music industry, and more recently the film industry. Jez is based in Alice Springs, Mparntwe, and has been working and living primarily in the Northern Territory since 2003. As a location sound recordist, Jez has built a professional kit that allows him to work on documentaries and short films in the Northern Territory. They also undertakes Field Recording in his travels, to build a library of environmental sounds and ambience for future projects, as well as incorporating found sounds into contemporary music productions.

Jez is committed to capturing the stories of the Northern Territory to a high industry standard and professional quality, and where possible, up skilling others in the process.

As a producer, musician and songwriter Jez was a member of Adelaide band The Violets (12/6 string acoustic), ABC TripleJ favourites in the 90’s, and has continued his electronic persona Cooperblack for the last 20 years, also with songs played on Triple J and many community radio stations in Australia. Jeremy also plays in Alice Springs based bands Stellar Sea, Bug Eyed and most recently Cloud Sequence with local artist and musician Saar Amptmeijer.

A love of electronic music was born from early hip hop, and breakdancing as an early teenager, combined with a desire to soak in the stereo speaker set up in their bedroom. Listening to Kraftwerk, Grandmaster Flash, soundtracks like Breakdance the movie, Beat Street, then listening to Bowie and all the connections there, like The Velvet Underground, Lou Reed, Eno, Talking Heads and the love journey of music continues – still.

Jez has a degree in Classical Composition, and very much enjoys arranging and composing string parts for contemporary songs and new contemporary compositions with classical  instruments.

Jez has recorded in many diverse environments, from world class studios, burnt out workers huts in Arnhem Land, fireside bush sessions complete with buffalo,  and many other unique places. He totally enjoys utilising vibrant and creatively inspiring places to capture unique sound.
